Why it changed

Growing economies and wider access to work and social support lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. At the same time, about 847 million people still live on less than $3.00 a day (the World Bank's new poverty line as of 2025, replacing $2.15), and since 2019-2020 the pace of decline has clearly slowed, hit by COVID and a worsening trend in Sub-Saharan Africa.
