Is adult obesity rising?
As of 2022, adult obesity worldwide is 15.4%: +129% since 1990.
Why it changed
Both are true at once here: adult obesity has been climbing for over three decades with no sign of slowing: age-standardised prevalence among adults 18+ rose from 6.7% in 1990 to 15.4% in 2022 — nearly 880 million people. And also, for the first time, this is tracked through consistent global monitoring (222 million children, adolescents, and adults measured across 200 countries) and matched by genuinely effective medical treatments that didn’t exist a decade ago.
