Why it changed

Two things are true at once: adult obesity has been climbing for over three decades with no sign of slowing: age-standardised prevalence among adults 18+ rose from 6.1% in 1990 to 16.4% in 2024 — roughly one adult in six. And for the first time, this is tracked through consistent global monitoring (222 million children, adolescents, and adults measured across 200 countries) and matched by genuinely effective medical treatments that didn’t exist a decade ago.
